Can you tell us more about it? Is it heavy for its size? Does it smell like anything when sanded? Is it dense? Porous? What does it taste like? OK...dont actually taste it, but the other stuff is important.

Might also help if you post a pic or two after you smooth at least a section of the piece with a plane or sandpaper so the figure and texture can be seen more easily.

It is difficult to tell without surfacing exactly what it is. However, just from the photo, it could very well be luaun. Because of its inconsistent hardness many times even within the same piece, as guitar wood luaun makes excellent kindling.

Sounds and looks like Luan to me as well. Not good for any part of a guitar IMHO.

 Good one, John!

aqualibguitars, I think people are trying to tell you that most of a guitar is labor, and so it is not a good idea to use bad wood.

Free, cheap: that is great on the wallet.
Salvaged, rescued: that is great for the environment.
But again, it takes so little wood to make a neck, that you should make sure the wood quality is at least good enough for the job.
