I'm delighted to have finally finished this one, and handed it off to it's proud owner. I built this for a fundraiser for a neighbor and firend who was very sick with brain cancer. It was raffled off at a dinner to raise $ for her treatment. The lucky winner thought he'd won the guitar on display, only to realize that he'd won a guitar to be built. He was patient, and ultimately I think he was far better off, since this one is a much better guitar than the other. Back and sides are Pau Ferro - which I really like working with. No pores at all, very dense, and bends well. I also like the appearance, which is somewhat rosewood like, under finish, but different enough so it wont' be mistaken for it. The sitka top was from RC tonewoods (thanks, Bob), and the laminated mahogany, ebony, maple neck was all from a local lumberyard. This one was hard to pass on - by far my best guitar so far, and it's got an interesting combo of responsiveness (with light strings, no less) and volume. It's definitely on the "projecting" rather than "enveloping" side. Very loud to the listener, less so to the player. You may recall a previous post on this one where I had problems with the finish on the top. The advice to strip and refinish worked well (thanks, Todd), and I think the couple of thou that was sanded off the top when doing so actually improved the tone. Thanks for looking. On to the next! |

Thanks, Chuck, Waddy, Fred! Fred, I'm building two guitars at the moment, both OM sized. The first is a commission - Amazon Rosewood with a sitka top, and some celtic appointments. The second is an Adiondack top with some very old mahogany for back, sides and neck laminate. |

Wow, the Pau Ferro looks great, and I like the black binding with it. Not a lot of bling, but it still stands out with your appointment choices. Very nice

Yes, it's definitely a nice thing to be able to do something that you really love doing, and do some good at the same time. Mike, Yes, this was the guitar I showed you at Woodstock. Since then I gave it a neck reset - I wasn't quite happy with it, and the setup and sound are 100% better. (Another reason why I love bolt on M&T necks It's fun to see these go on to their owners, although there's definitely a little feeling of emptiness when you've gotten to like how it sounds. |

That's beautiful Corky! That Pau Ferro is really nice looking stuff. What shape is that? Large upper bout might be one reason why it sounds so good. |

Thanks, all! I handed her off to the new owner over a nice dinner with our families, complete with a certificate obligating him to jam with me and friends on a regular basis! It was a lot of fun, and he and his wife were pretty blown away. Alan, that's an OM shape, or OOO - can't remember the difference (this one is 14 frets to the body) Steve, yes, you've got a good eye. I buy all my abalone from Andy Depaule. He's great to work with. |
