For you folks using shellac as a sealer.Do you scuff sand with 320 or 400 after sealing and right before applying finish. Also if your shooting shellac or finish usually about an hour apart,do you just leave the finish in the gun, then clean up at the end of the day? James |

yes and yes. I have left lacquer in the gun overnight with no problem, I just close the needle when I leave it sitting. A light sanding after shellac but it is probably not that necessary. Fred |

Pretty much any finish you can put over shellac will burn into shellac so sanding isn't necessary........but I always scuff it a little. You can leave shellac or solvent based lacquer (or pretty much any evaporative finish) in your gun between coats or longer. The finish contains solvents that will re disolve finish that has set up in the gun. Other finishes, varnish, catalyzed urethane, waterbased finishes ect need to be cleaned out every coat. Once varnish, urethane or other reactive finishes cross link solvents won't wash them out. Waterbased finishes don't contain solvents to re disolve any that's set up in the gun. |
