I just received an email notification of a sale at Woodworker's Supply. One of the items on sale is a pattern makers vise for $74.99. You can reach Woodworkers Supply on the web at woodworker.com. Here's a picture. Max Attachment: pattern makers vise.jpg

I bought a similar vice from Woodcraft about 3 years ago, one of the most used tools in my shop. That is a great price. Fred |

Yup, got mine from Japan Woodwork about 2 years ago about the same price. I love it and would not want to be without it. One thing you'll want to do though is get some lock-tight (get the blue though) and lock tight the bolts which hold the swiveling heads in place. Make sure when you put them back in that you leave them just snug enough to allow the heads to swivel but not so loose that they are sloppy, if you know what I mean. The other thing to do with these is to get some leather and face the heads with it, draping the leather between the heads, with enough distance to allow the vise to be well opened up, or use some heavy elastic bands and run them between the head base. This will help in avoiding dents from the metal runners should you not be holding your work when releasing the vise. Thanks goes out to Todd Stock for these improvements to the great deal on the pattern makers vise. |

In addition to what Rod said, I also took mine to the belt sander and knocked off all the sharp corners. Later, after finding out that wasn't enough, I wrapped the tail ends of the two flat parallel bars with duct tape. The wood is happier for it. Pat |
