Ok...so I have filled the pores on some Tzalam....(Mayan Walnut)....I used Timbermate...anyway. How can you tell if the pores are filled correctly at this point? What is a good tip to know when the pores are filled before the top coat is applied?

Thanks,
Jeff

It all depends. How deep were the pores? (not familiar with that wood) How hot and dry was the ambient between application to sand back?? How long did you leave the timbermate on the surface before sanding??? I am not going into detail cause we just has a thread on this the other day, so have a look down the list of active topics. If it is right to go, you should see no sign of sink back once the filled sanded surface is wiped down with naphtha and examined with magnification.

I can pretty much feel when the pores are filled. The piece should feel smooth. You can also see it looking across the surface at an angle. The 2 biggest problems that cause poor pore filling is bridging the pores, which will sink in later, or sanding too aggressivly, sanding into new pores.
