I am gathering materials to build a string bass and my plans call for two layers of 1/8" plywood for the body. I feel that this is a bit thick but the first try should stick with the plans. I would hate to put the work into crummy materials but I tend to be too tight-fisted for my own good. Does anybody have good sources or creative ideas? Thanks Bob ![]() |

Try Noah's. They supply boat builders and marine play is typically very high quality. http://www.noahsmarine.com/ |

Lee Valley has 6 ply 3mm but it is only 25 "sq. It is Finnish. May be worth a look. Tom |

Thanks for the replies. Winsor plywood has been my normal wood source so far. I will pursue this with them. Lee Valley is a definite potential source. I am building a Baroque bass so 24" square might just fit. I had not thought of marine plywood before but I like the idea. Thanks guys. Bob ![]() |

I buy plywood for resonators at Wicks Aircraft supply. The metric birch is what I buy and is very good quality. http://www.wicksaircraft.com/catalog/pr ... index.html |

Aircraft plywood was my first thought but for the first go-around I think that I will go with my regular wood source if they have it. If this design sounds decent, I would like to use 45 degree aircraft ply when someone else is paying the freight and the instrument has a long potential life. The best that this version can expect is that someone will accept it as a gift. I now have a better handle on sources. Bob ![]() |
