Post subject: | OLF SJ or Own Design? |
I've been thinking whether I should make a OLF SJ or design my own shape that is similar. Do any of you have any pictures to share of both the OLF SJ and/or a design of your own? It might help me decide... Thanks, Steve |

I make an OLF SJ. The shape is the OLF SJ, but the rest is mine. My own bracing design etc |

j45 plan, all mahogany, even the binding. Mr. Mudd, no decorations at all. From the scarf up is maple. Interior 2" styrofoam mold- not the best idea. It's comfortable to play for a big guitar. |

I just went through the same decision making process. So, I bought both the SJ & the MJ plans. Niether of the shapes were exactly what I was looking for, so I took the SJ & changed the lines 'till I (& my customer) liked the look. I ended up widening the lower bout to 15 3/4", changing the waist & putting more curve into the waist to upper bout area. Having a set of plans is great, but you don't have to stick exactly to them. The basic geometry has to be right, but there's plenty of room to "personalize" to suit your own sense of what looks "right". |

These are all good comments but I was hoping to get to see some examples... |

I don't have any examples of a small jumbo but I have used this program before for designing shapes. http://www.liutaiomottola.com/formulae/gthang.htm its free and a pretty awesome way to design shapes. They have a few shapes included for examples and to 'tweak' , one of which is a J200. I usually mess up posting links so just cut and paste if it didn't work right above. Matt |

Here is the inside of my OLF SJ 12 string....clearly my most popular instrument with the professionals. ![]() Graham Nash playing one ![]() Walnut Lutz OLF SJ - My own bracing ![]() Walnut Lutz OLF played by owner ![]() Another OLF SJ 6 string. My bracing. Lutz Ziricote. Set up work ![]() OLF SJ 6 string bracing ![]() FYI, I am a Somogyi graduate, so I use his philosophy on stiffness, bracing etc I no longer build from plans. I will pick a shape I like and go from there. The OLF SJ was a typical example. I liked the shape and designed the bracing based on the body shape. Always work from the bridge location based on the scale length. Everything else works around that. In all my guitars I use a double mortice and tenon joint and the upper transverse brace is glued to the extended baltic from the neck block. Top stiffness and bracing design, Somogyi influenced. |
