Just made a quick trip to Sioux Falls to deliver a resonator to Dan Mahar (http://www.youtube.com/user/danmaharofficial) before he embarks on a tour of Ireland with Billy Dean. We named it cailíní rua (Gaelic for red headed girl)

Wow ... some amazing work from folks on this forum! Love Rod & James body shapes and that thinline of Thomas's is gorgeous too. I'm a big fan of smaller parlor guitars so those instruments by Danny V and Dave are right up my alley. I really like the proportions on Robbie's cutaway and that reso by Terrence ... very cool indeed! I've got one of my Bearclaw-Sitka/Braz Concert models prepped for filler and then on to French Polishing next week (photo on the left was just before the neck carve).

Cheers!

Hey Dave - that is pretty cool how the slant on the top of the headstock ties in to slanted tuner placement and the end of the fretboard...very clever!

Hey Robbie ... thanks for that. The assymetrical peghead/fingerboard termination/bridge thing is fairly new to me ... not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm having fun with it!

Cheers!

wow7-eyes Alexandru! I guess you're pretty happy with that. Nice work. Did you lay up the purfling and glue it in as one piece? What wood did you use for the purf? I hope it sounds as well as you're hoping. It looks like you put a fair bit of effort into achieving that.

Cheers,
Danny

Thanks! The white is thick maple and the brown is regular 0.6mm Indian rw. There are 2 additional Indian strips thickening the binding. I glue the 3 purfling strips separately. The maple is 1/4" strips from LMI and the brown is cut from sheets. After glueup I true the edges with a plane and end up with a 5mm or so wide strip, which I then slice lengthwise with a Japanese saw and true again each down to 2mm. Its a ridiculously tedious method. I also used to glue it to the binding prior to bending but this type of maple is prone to buckling, so now I bend them separately.

Hey Alan ... I like the necks chunky (but maybe not quite THAT chunky!). Ha!

Wow, what nice mitered purfling joints from Alexandru eh?

I was going to call out names, but all the stuff posted looks great! I am slowly making progress on another claro walnut J-185. Inlaid some maple burl and abalone into a rosette and got some rough bracing on yesterday.

Ok, back to what's actually happening in my shop. Bent the sides and joined the top for #3, installed the rosette for #2 and closed the body on #1.

the scuff marks are just sanding scratches in a protective spit coat of shellac.

Hey SCGib68. I'm curious about what that first picture has goin' on? Care to elaborate?
Chris

Actually I mislabeled it calling it the top of #2. It's the back of guitar #2 that has a spalted maple rosette installed in the inside of the guitar that will match the one on the Sinker Redwood top I'll be using. The guy I'm making it for thought it would be somewhat visible and cool looking from the outside. He also asked if I could use BRW bracing to run across it for the back. I said "Sure, got an extra $500 you want to throw on top of your cost for this git to find some BRW thick enough to use for bracing?" Needless to say he's fine with spruce bracing.

SCGib68 -- I'm also curious about the soundboard orientation and reason for not going for the bookmatched look. I'm guessing that orientation was to make the soundboard look more like a one piece top, correct.

Correct. I kept staring at the top with the bookmatched look and it wasn't hitting me like I felt it should with the curl to it. So I cut down my glue line then I flipped it around after I rejointed the edges. To my eye it just looked more striking for some reason under the pattern that way so I went ahead and glued it up again.

I closed two boxes earlier this week and cut the binding/purfling channels yesterday. Routing is the only part of the building process that I really don't enjoy--very stressful for me. I always end up having to finesse a few areas with my LMI gramil and a chisel anyway, so I've decided that I'm going to try cutting the channels completely by hand on the next one and see if that is a more pleasant experience. Here's how they turned out...

Nothing happened in the shop but I spent my weekend with 2 of my guitar heros, Tony McManus and Al Petteway and my luthier and inlay hero Grit Laskin at Tony's guitar weekend in a cool bead and breakfast at Elora Ontario. There are more photos and some videos on my photobucket page http://s190.photobucket.com/albums/z228/fetellier/Tony%20McManus%20Guitar%20weekend%20Elora%20Ontario%202010/

I spend a lot of the weekend making dust, but it was me trying my hand at furniture instead of guitars.

Just wanted to say how cool it is to have David Wren posting here. He has a lot of experience and knowledge.

And David - love that guitar. Love the headstock and the repeat at the end of the fingerboard. Very nice.

Neil
