Super lightweight Gotoh?

Post subject:  Super lightweight Gotoh?
I seem to recall seeing a new super lightweight Gotoh tuner about a year ago. I can't remember where I saw it or who sells it.

Can anyone help?

Howard, I found this reference to their 'Stealth' tuner at the Gotoh main site. If you follow the link it shows the specs and states that it is much lighter than their std. tuners.

Howard,

I believe it was Shane that first showed them here (the stealth ones). He mentioned he would be selling them. I have been itching to try them myself but have not yet had a chance. If the website is correct they are less than half the weight of the lightest Waverlies.

Indeed it was Shane, and I bought a set that I'll be using on either my next guitar or the one after that. Definitely ugly as-is, but I'll be embedding them inside the headstock with a back plate to cover them up. The posts are even a bit shorter than usual (by about 1/16" if I recall), so I think they're designed for that. I think it will look awesome, more like they're part of the instrument than just functional machinery attached to it :) Gotta make wood buttons too, for an even more integrated look.

Those are the ones. I thought Gotoh says they weigh 11g. But anyway . . .

How tall are the posts? Someone said they are a bit short.

Choice of buttons?

And most importantly, what kind of feedback are you getting on performance. These are the only tuner that mentions a limit on string tension. That limit is more than a medium gauge string, but I wonder what it means for wear and smoothness when the gears have so little area.

Hi Howard, (that was my dads name), I got some of those Gotoh 510's a couple of years ago, and that's my default
tuner now.
I don't know about button choice.
I like the all black one personally.
They look good to me on a blond guitar.
Since I play lap steel with heavy strings, 14-60,
I haven't had any probs with them,
and I play a lot.
They are so nice that when I pick another git with Schallers,
I can't believe the difference.

Hey Howard, the weight thing is probably just as accurate as the advertised mileage on your car. laughing6-hehe gaah

Anyway, There are 4 button options. The body comes only in black but the button and button shaft come in black, gold and chrome. The standard string post is 22.2 mm just like the standard string height on their 510's. Another interesting option is placing these on the top of the peghead. They have a very short post and they call it their Ukulele option.

Hard to tell from the image as I cant quite make out the print, but the STM-31 looks to have a 'medium' post height and that could work well to inlet them into the back of the headstock for a true 'stealth' look. A run of rare earth magnets to hold the back of headstock veneer in place could take care of any future servicing issues. 8-)

Looks like they'd be great for a Lyon and Healy violin scroll mandolin headstock type of deal.
