I finally got around to shooting some pictures of this build, which is my 8th. This has Cocobolo back and sides, Adi top and Curly Maple binding. I should add the pickguard is made from Grumpy's ( Mario Proulx ) new material as sold by StewMac

Fred, that is just gorgeous. I love coco - it just glows. This guitar makes me want to build a dread.

It has been asked how does she sound. Well a little tight as it is only 6 days old but real clear and for a D has a good balanced tone and even volume up the neck. It is opening up but it needs more playing time, this is the 1st time I used Adi for a top and I have been told they take a bit longer to find their final voice.

I noticed that the reply was post 999 for me, so I just had to make it 1000. I might need to spend less time on my computer.

Fred,

That's a really fine-looking dread! The cocobolo is reminiscent of plain, straight-grain BRW of old.

Pat I think I know of a similar set that if it is still available I will grab. At 1st I was a little put off by the boring look but after sanding it really made me want to build a Dread with it for just the reasons mentioned in the quote above.

Looks fantastic Fred-

Did you use zipflex or inlay the rosette and perf the old fashion way? If it's zipflex how did it go?

No zipflex, I use BWB wood purfling on each side of .062 abalone. I get my pearl from the guy in Australia that is always on Ebay but I use his web site to buy as it is about the same price and I can order more radius sizes and by the inch instead of set quantities as on ebay. The quality is quite good and I buy enough for several guitars at a time so I can get good color matches as I work my way around.

Well it may not drive me to make a Dread, but I sure recognize nice work when I see it! Nice work, Fred!

It came from Exotic woods in Burlington Ontario. I picked up a couple real stiff tops when I was there and wish I had bought more.

Fred,
That is excellent work. Well done. I have been toying with the idea of using coco. Did you experience any problems with it during the build process?
I'm referring to issues like allergic reactions, sneezing and the like. I've been told some folks may have varying degrees of reactivity to the stuff.

Again, a gorgeous well done piece. I would ask for a soundbite but I haven't had the time to post any of any of my builds so I won't.

Beautiful instrument Fred !!! The straight grained coco is beautiful and the abalone purfs really frame it well. Congratulations on another nice one!
