| Post subject: | Truss Rod Routing |
Hi I have this type of truss rod (picture) The bottom is curved and the depth is slightly larger at the end for about 2" - it has probably got a slightly larger radius also. Do I route one slot the same width and depth or use two different bits and depth settings to match the profile of the truss rod ? John |

I haven't yet finished my first, so do with my words what you please, but I believe it is most common to simply route the channel at a constant depth and width. I used a similar style truss rod on mine. On mine the beads from the welds made the two ends somewhat wider, so I filed them down to a consistent width. I have heard of some seating the truss rod in silicone to ensure there are no rattles if gaps are present. Good luck. Aaron |

I use a Martin rod (I believe that's what you have pictured) I use a 1/4" round bottomed slot for the small part of the rod, and a 3/8" round bottomed slot for the end. I also glue a wood filler strip over the rod to prevent rattles. I've never like the idea of getting silicone anywhere near a guitar. |

this is not a martin rod. You do want to rout so that the slot is reasonably snug. Don't worry that the barrel bolt end may not be perfect as that is the mechanism that drives the rod. |

This may be a rod from Saga . You want to use a 2 step approach. you need to make the depth match the rod. You then secure the rod with silicone caulk. The chalking is to fill voids . Most 2 way rods will have you use the silicone fill. |

It was the same rod as you supplied in the Martin OM kit which I filled with PVA glue - trouble is I can't remember what the pre routed slot looked like
