Post subject: | Adi bracing stock / BRW stock in Canada |
Hi everyone! Since I visited the Godin shop last winter and saw that they only use adirondack spruce for their braces, I have this idea in head. I think the stiffness/weight ratio of the adi is pretty good for bracings. So, is there any place I could find it in Canada? And if not, maybe in US? Also, I'd like to find some little pieces of BRW, for bridges, inlays, rosettes, etc... It can't be shipped for US... and I can't find any canadian sources. Thanks! Francis |

Hi Francis I've never dealt there, but Northern Tonewood, in Labrador lists Red Spruce. Go to http://www.hvgb.net/~tonewood/acousticguitar.htm Cheers Bob Hames |

Francais: Lots of folks like to use Red spruce for braces. I know they have their own reasons for doing so. I'm not so concerned about type of spruce as I am about the quality of the wood. Only once have I tried Red Spruce from a supplier( non of the sponsors on this Forum) these were sawn blanks about 1"by 2",the wood looked good but out of 8 pieces only 2 were not full of runout. To me straight grain and no run out are the prime requirement for braces and even more so than the top. I only use split billets now to cut for my braces. Have not been able to find a supplier of split Red Spruce billets. To answer your original question, try Adirondack Top Supplies. Tom |

I've had good success with Lutz bracing stock too. Shane from Highmountain Tonewoods (a sponsor here) can hook you up. |

I'm also interested in finding a supplier that carries BRW bridge blanks. (Exotic Tonewoods does not seem to have any.) |

Quote: I only use split billets now to cut for my braces. Have not been able to find a supplier of split Red Spruce billets. I have a limited supply for sale from the Ted Davis wood stash. Most of it is between 12 and 20 years old. Ted taught me to split all the wood, both for tops and for bracewood. I have shipped red spruce all over the world.....from Iceland to Thailand. When it comes to bracewood, splitting the billets is especially important, because most of the extra wood generated for braces comes from the outside of the log. If the log has some spiral (as most do), then the greatest runout generated by sawing parallel to the bole will be at the outside of the log. |

You may want to contact Boucher in Quebec as they process and sell a lot of red spruce. |
