I'm thinking about buying a set of the OLF MJ plans for a new commission. I'd appreciate any comments from folks who have built one (or more). Pictures would be greatly appreciated as well. Many thanks, in advance. Dan |

Daniel: I've built four MJ's now, they are my favorite shape of all. The finished instrument is wonderful, very comfortable, sounds great. If you PM me your email I'll send you a bunch of pictures (they're all hi res and therefore large). Highly recommended! Mikey |

I've built two - one was a cutaway - and they're both great. The cutaway is my performance guitar and I've had several other players try to buy it from me. I highly recommend the plans. Chuck |

Daniel, I actually got a tracing of an O size from John Hall and made my own bending form and mold. He has all the sizes available. I found a cheap source for Baltic Birch plywood, and have made about half the forms I own. If I'm in a hurry or don't have time, I'll buy them. They don't cost much more than the materials. Just an alternative that is out there. Good luck on your MJ. I also ordered the plans from Stewmac. I really like the MJ. I hope it sounds as good as it looks. |

If I were a potential buyer and I asked you as a builder what differences there are between your SJ and MJ, how would you answer? |

Good question, JJ; I don't know what's normally done, but I have designed a new model for a commission a couple of times. Especially when working around a client's physical "disability". Cocky, I guess. So far, it's worked out fine. My last commission, the client supplied a body tracing & neck dimensions. The rest was up to me. The guitar turned out very well & the client is a happy man. And that was not a bargain basement guitar. One of the reasons I wanted to use a "proven" plan this time, was to take some of the stress out of the process. If nothing else, it keeps me on my toes. |

I'm not sure what's normally done either, Daniel. There's nothing wrong with your approach if you have a history of happy players who take an active role in their guitar's shape, design and characteristics. Since their ideas and ego are personally invested it certainly lessens the chance that they'll be unhappy with the results. |
