After finishing guitar #2, and before I got started on #3, I was offered and accepted a job to start a high school wood shop program. One student is interested in building a guitar and I am thrilled to be able to help. I am turning to this forum for help, as I am qualified to teach woodworking, but not guitar building. Since most agree, the first guitars are a woodworking project, we should be fine. I will approach the class and the guitar building student with the same mindset that I learned through, resources vs. resourcefulness. Meaning what do you have available to get this project done. One of those resources is the internet and this forum. I want the students to be able to use a wood workers mindset to research a project on line before building. The student's name is Holden and will create a username to use this forum himself. (I did get a permission slip specifically for this) He will start asking some questions this weekend. Holden is interested in building a 12 string, as he has other acoustics and would like a 12 string. His first assignment is to learn and understand scale length and choose one for his guitar. Likely we will use the OLF SJ plans, as I have them and it seems a good guitar for a 12 string. There are a few things that I will insist on, inexpensive wood, and working off standard plans. So I will open up this thread for advice for both first time student and teacher, as well as advice on building a 12 string. Holden will start a thread on 12 string scale length. As the project continues, he will be asking the questions. Thanks all for the help, Rob |

I just started my 12 string SJ last night. Looking forward to learning with Holden, and maybe helping out along the way! |
