I've seen several recommendations to wet wood with naptha to see the grain or find tiny scratches in finishes that still require sanding or polishing out. So I tried this. Works great - for about a second until the naptha evaporates. How do you use this stuff in a way that makes it last long enough to see anything?

Use mineral spirits, or turpentine.

I lightly mark (usually circle the offending scratch) with some of my kids' chalk - doesn't mark the wood, but shows me where to work once the naphta evaporates.

Pat,
Betenol on Innis Rd. near Bantree has a low odor mineral spirits type solvent which is nice to work with although I can't say I've used it for what yu are asking, but it should last longer than naptha.

Can you use DN alcohol, or will there be adverse consequences? Not trying to high-jack the post, just thought someone will have a quick answer?

Sometimes DN Alcohol will leave a white film on the wood as it dries.

Wetting with alcohol, lacquer thinner, acetone and other strong volatile solvents is highly discouraged: it will smear rosewood oils (and other oily woods) on your top and pretty purflings. Turpentine and petroleum based solvents do not do that, at least not to an extent where it spoils the work.

Thanks all. I will have a look for low odor mineral spirits.

I've used both and I prefer the naptha. It is gentler on the wood.
