Mahogany is good for necks. But Okoumé is not mahogany... its okoumé. |

Some refer to Okoumé (Aucoumea klaineana) as "Gaboon" or as "Gaboon Mahogony" , not the same as "African Mahogany" (Khaya ivorensis). Popular wood names sometimes are a big mess... There is a nice website (thewoodexplorer.com) which allows to compare physical (and other) properties of woods: - Okoumé (Aucoumea klaineana) - "real" Mahogony (Swietenia macrophylla) |

I just read a bit on it and it's not a wood I would try to build with. |

I also read a bit on it. Bending strength is a bit less than Mahagony but it's more than Honduras Cedar (Cedrela odorata). Stability is good. It's light. It isn't ugly. Did I miss something? |

Well I guess the better pieces could work as replacement for cedar. What i read said the texture is coarse, that it has lots of silica and the density was given as only .43 - very light but I agree cedar is often as light too. |
