At my local hardwood store I CSM find good 8/4 Mahogony. But I need bigger. The harp guitar peghead rests on a structural block that is 3.25" wide by 2.5" thick (roughly). On my first I laminated boards together to build the block. From a structural point of view, I like it. But purists do not. I need to find 4x4 mahogony. Or find a unique idea that has not occured to me. I have thought about veneers. Sources? Ideas? Thanks Mike |

Maybe check with Hibdon? They cut a lot of mahogany, and probably have odd size chunks left over. Also might have a one-piece neck blank 3.25 wide that you could make a bunch of them out of (plus ripping a 1" neck blank off of it before you start) |

No, the biggest I've got are plain 1x3 neck blanks and a 5.5x0.75 board I use for tail blocks. I'm just saying that if you find a 3x4 neck blank that's a little oversized like 3.25x4, it would allow you to cut 1.5" or so off, leaving 3.25x2.5 to slice up into a bunch of your blocks. |

How big do you need........ 3 1/4" X 2 1/2" X how long? Do you need a block, or an entire neck blank. I've got some really big Honduran Mahogany boards that I cut neck blanks out of. I don't really want to sell any blanks, but I might can get a few blocks out of the left overs. |

If you can't find what you need Mike, let me know. I still have a bunch of 16/4 Honduras. Shane |

You have listed the width and thickness, implying that 10/4 or 12/4 mahogany is thick enough. What is the length? I also have scraps from cutting one-piece guitar neck blanks from 12/4 and 16/4 lumber. |

I really appreciate all the replies! I will do some better measuring and estimating this evening and reply back tomorrow. A good guess is 4-5" long. Most of the block is inside the harp arm for strength. Now that I know there are sources, I will do a good job of estimating the requirement. Thanks guys! Mike |

If you ever need more than the one chunk, I have ordered Honduras mahogany for furniture in the last two years from Steven Wall Lumber in Mayodan, NC, and it was excellent density and color. They have a website that shows their current price for select 16/4 at $6.30 per board foot. 12/4 is $5.75. http://www.walllumber.com/premier.asp Service has been stellar. The 12/4 walnut I bought for my workbench base in the mid-1990s was equally stellar. |
