| Post subject: | Z-poxy + Tru Oil, a good idea? |
I'm getting close to finishing my next guitar, and I'm thinking of trying Tru Oil. My main reasoning is because it is easy to do indoors with little ventilation. Spraying is out of the question for me. I've tried doing some research and I can't find too much info on its compatibility with Z Poxy. I've used Z Poxy once now, and it was so great I never want to go back to other fillers. Anyone know of what kinds of result or adhesion issues I may have? |

Do a search on this topic. Many of us have had a bad experience of necks getting "fuzzy" after a month or two when Tru-Oil is used over Z-Poxy on necks. I'm using McFaddens filler now and it seems to be working OK. |

Have a read of this thread. http://www.luthiersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=24144&hilit=+zpoxy+truoil When you do a search, try adding a "+" sign before each key word e.g. +zpoxy+truoil and you will get plenty of results the topic above is just one of a number that have come up on this subject. By the way, you mention not having good ventilation for your reason for wanting to use truoil, I suggest you think very carefully about playing around with zpoxy in such an environment, your playing with REAL danger, that stuff can bite. Try doing a search on this forum using +epoxy+reaction and you will see what I mean, nasty stuff. Cheers Kim |

The fumes of epoxy are colourless and relatively odourless, the problem is that their small molecular structure allow them to permeate through most anything, clothing and skin are no barrier. Sure cover up, mask and gloves on, but don't for get to work in a well ventilated area AND keep a fan running to push the invisible away cause its what you 'don't notice that is doing the most harm. To answer you're original question, yes you can use Tru-oil over Z poxy, however use a washcoat of shellac between them and you should have no problem. I now use egg white sanded slurry to fill pores. Colin |

Hi Collin, I have used the same method as you on my first guitar and I am pleased with the results. One thing I have notice on the back ( IRW)is that it seems that there are parts that absorb more then others and it forms some darker patches in some places. In the end it is almost indiscernible. Have you noticed this? how did you do it ? |
