I am starting a parlor guitar about the size of a Goodall (which is a bit larger than most). Anyway I have a piece of flamed walnut I want to use for the back that I picked up at the local hardwood dealer in his firewood pile. . . . . absolutely beautiful and about 10% so it shouldn't buckle up on me as 12% is normal around here. only problem is the back when bookmatched will have two f hole looking holes in it. I can make it look good, but I'm not sure if I will end up with a dead sound or not (This is only my fifth one) The back is so figured I could just fill them with ebony dust and glue, but as they will be north of the sound hole I was thinking maybe they would just kick the sound back at the player a bit....... any ideas? |

Sounds like time for some inlays to me. Maybe a couple birds or something? How far from the edge are the cracks? If near the edge, another nice design would be declaring the bindings to be vines, and put leaves extending inward from them. Maybe a few on the sides too to complete the look  Pictures would help. As well as the other woods you're using (soundboard, neck, binding, fingerboard, headplate), to come up with a fitting inlay theme that will coincidentally cover those cracks. |

I think it's kinda too figured for that........ now it will be mine and I know that some guys use those sound port designs in the sides..........but the acoustics question leaves me in the air as I have nothing to reference to. My others were more the straight grain variety. Thanks for the reply though . . . . |
