Forgive the rather descriptive title. Here's a Ziricote wedge just finished on a new deep body OM. Client sent the Ziricote for back/sides, and also sent the African blackwood for the bindings. The wedge is a bookmatched piece of Ziricote that takes advantage of some sapwood. This is a recurring theme on the guitar, so the owner and I thought this would be appropriate. Very nice Steve! I love the wedge and also the African blackwood bindings. I am planning a Ziricote build and couldn't decide on bindings. Now I know what to use ![]() |

Very nice Steve, and the single white purfling line frames everything beautifully. Bob |

Looks great, Steve! I like it a lot! Very elegant. Thanks for showing it to us. Here's one where I used eucalyptus burl for the wedge (matching the rosette) and walnut for the bindings (matching walnut neck) with fine black/maple purflings. |

'Figuratively' speaking that really is a beautiful guitar Steve! ![]() Wow, great figure. Quite distinctive and really an eye catcher. At first glance it appeared to be Black Palm on either side of the sapwood on the wedge. Please post again after you get it sealed and finished. Keep up the great work! |

Outstanding in every detail, as per usual, Steve! I really love the wood combinations. I too have a gorgeous set of Ziricote with lots of sapwood, just like yours. I don't have blackwood, but I do have ebony bindings that I think would do nicely. I was wondering, though, where did you cut the pieces for the wedge? I'm thinking the sapwood is in the middle, so you either got it from the back pieces, or possibly, the side pieces. Either way, that would mean that the pieces were long enough to accomodate both the back and wedge...or you had more plank to work with that just the usual B&S... That will look killer under finish! |

Very nice, I like the sap wood showing and goes well with the sapwood in the back. Fred |

That's pretty tasteful Steve! Didn't care for the contrast until it's taken in with the back. Blends in great! |

Thanks so much, gents! Even pulled Billy out of retirement...I'm honored! Alain, that extra Ziricote came from Hibdon (as did the set itself). I called 'em and asked if they had some scraps lying around, and indeed they did. Cut-offs from a run of fretboard blanks. These were purchased for the rosette blank, and I got to thinking that some sliver of Ziricote--like this--might look nice at the posterior. Here is another pic--showing how one of the pieces was pressed into service for the rosette: Attachment: Top7 Sm.jpg And: Attachment: Binding8 Sm.jpg Again, many thanks. Steve |

I sure I hope I get a chance to hear this one when it's done, Steve. You make such fine sounding guitars, and the ziricote/sinker redwood combination could be out of this world. Keep us posted, please. |

Very nice Steve; as is Todds . Todd how about a pic of the rose? Ziricote is a beautiful wood . How'd you like working with the Redwood? Mike |

No "intrusion" at all, Todd. And, I very much like that wedge on your guitar as well...just forgot to say it. Thanks for posting. Steve |

Mike Collins wrote: How'd you like working with the Redwood? Mike Hey Mike, let me answer your Q. I enjoyed it, though with a bit of trepidation. I'm such a Sitka guy, and this top was giving me different numbers in every category that it was somewhat like new territory. However--the tap tone was like nothing else. Ryan called it our "T-Rex" top. When asked just what that meant, he said, "Remember when the T-Rex makes his first appearance in Jurassic Park? *Boom*...*Boom*... *Boom*.... It taps like that!" Well there you have it, an obscure reference to describe sound, and why not? Is that so different from "Ice water trebles"? Or, perhaps my favorite, "Toasted wheat underpinnings in the midrange"? This was/is a great top, and we only hope we didn't leave it too thick. We'll see.... Steve |
