Post subject: | Pin Holes in sound board finish |
Hi, Hoping someone can help? I'm on my fifth Guitar and have finished it with Nitrocellulos Lacquere as I have done for the others. However there are strings of little pins holes in the lacquere that follow the grain in the sound bound. Any suggestions?? Graham |

the 2 most common reasons for pin holes are- Laying on to much finish & trapping air-which tries to escape. Thus making pinholes! The other is contamination of the finish-oils,moisture-etc Mike |

I'll second Mike's opinion on that and add that it's usually coats that are too thick possibly in combination with air temp that's too high which makes the surface skin over before all the solvent escapes. The real bummer is, I've never been able to get them out without sanding pretty much all the way back to the wood. I would do that or possibly spray a couple of thinned coats with some extra retarder in them. Maybe others will have better ideas. |

Thanks for the advice, I've bitten the bullet and taken the finish right off. I'll do it again with thinner coates to start with. I've washed the surface with thinners and sanded it back so hopefully I've removed any contamination as well. Thanks again |
