Is this product dewaxed? Would I have problems using it under different finishes? - waterborne acrylic? - lacquer? - Tru-Oil? Thanks, Steve |

The only Zinsser product that I am certain is dewaxed is the "Seal Coat." |

Yes, it even says it's dewaxed on the can. You have to look for it, but it's there, somewhere. |

Thanks, Steve Steve, This is the product I use for sealing my binding channels so super glue doesn't seep into the end grain of the top or back. I also use it for sealing the rosette channels so the super glue doesn't bleed into the top. I'm pretty sure it is dewaxed, but if it doesn't say on the can, then don't use it under finish. |

I had trouble with Varnish wanting to do strange things when brushed over Shellac.... Specifically -- I ended up with little funny looking bubbles when it sat in a hot car.... Didn't happen when I brushed the varnish straight onto the wood.... I also ended up with an instance of Varnish peeling off of the shellac -- apparently, the Varnish didn't "Bite" into the shellac -- and it just lays on top of it.... Since then, I brush a "Spit coat" of varnish onto the wood and let it dry a while to protect from dings and act kinda like a seal coat.... Tru-Oil is a varnish -- so I might check it on scrap 1st -- just to make sure it bonds well... It may work just fine for you... Thanks John |

Todd Stock wrote: Shellac needs to be well toothed before most topcoats go on...it's a good barrier coat, but bonds depend on both mechanical bonding (keying) and the usual molecular forces to keep things stuck. Tooth the shellac just prior to topcoat...bond will be stronger on a fresher, more energetic surface. This is fascinating. Can You give us more information about the research on this? |

Thanks for the comments... ![]() I do want to put Tru-Oil over the Zinsser (spray can) shellac. I was planning to sand the shellac with 220 first. Is this a good plan? Has anyone done this? Any more comments before I move forward? Steve |
