I've always found it tricky to do a controlled job cutting back reinforcement strips (for braces) and similar jobs. Either the cut was too shallow, or I ended up scoring the adjacent surface.

I bought a LeeValley veneer saw recently (for cutting veneer- no surprise there) and I've found it's a very handy tool for shallow cuts.

So if you have $30 'burning a hole in your pocket', it might be worth a look.
