o.k. so i built my first guitar in a "class" held by a master builder, basicly what I did was shape the parts and asemble them at his direction , ie " shape the brace to look like this ' etc etc very little discusion took place concerning voicing or the why or wherefor of any part of the process. while the top was off, in the excitement of building , I signed my top and numbered the guitar 001 . so now three years later, after going through the process of tooling, relearning many of the assembly processes , studying voicing and all that . I now have my first solo build finished, which I will be offering for sale, since it has been strung up for more than a year, sounds better than I hoped and has not moved even a tad under string tension. so my question is , is my latest my second guitar or my first guitar ? thanks Jody |

I'd call it your second but it can be your first if you want. John |

I would say 1st as it was the first solo build, is it as well built and sound as good or even better than the student guitar. If so you are on your way and lessons were well learned Fred |

I dont know, if you call it #1, then theres going to be all sorts of confusion down the road with duplicate serial numbers, just like 50-60's Gibsons. ![]() |

I think that 'they all count'! So it's #2 in my book. Or, you could follow in the steps of some of the 'masters' and start your numbering from 100, or put the year in the numbering scheme (your first might be 0801, your second 0901, third and fourth 1001, 1002, etc...) - just as long as the guitar collectors of the 22nd century are confused! ![]() Cheers John |

Jody: If you have to ask it must concern you. For me it wouldn't matter, either for you or myself if I was doing it. To use the old cliche " Follow your gut". Tom |

Todd Stock wrote: If I have to understand what I'm doing to count a guitar as my #1, I guess I must have started at -150 or so. well Todd the question is not realy what do(or did) I know. but what did I realy contribute to the outcome of the instrument? I selected none of the materials, the guitar was his design, he made all the critical descisions, such as plate thickness brace locations( and dimensions) the couple minor mistakes were repaired by the master ,and I am sure he even did some voicing after hours when the students were not there . I am fine with calling the latest #2 especialy since the first was signed and dated ,but there is some doubt as to what my contribution to the outcome actualy was was. I tell everyone localy I built it, which technicly I did , but I will not bring it to a gathering of luthiers and present it as my work ! But it certainly did create a very high bar for the quality and sound of #2! Jody |
