Post subject: | Got a nice score today |
So I'm visiting my parents in South Carolina right now and while I was out for a beer with a friend a few nights ago he told me that his father had a large stash of Brazilian cherry (or jatoba). His father found out that I build guitars and asked if I wanted to have some of the stuff to use in a guitar, so without hesitating I told him I'd love to use some of it. I didn't really expect to get much usable material, but my friend came by tonight and dropped off seven planks measuring 49.5" x 5.5" x 1" and asked me if it would be enough to make a guitar out of. I figure if they're properly sawn, I can get 4 back sets or four side sets out of each board. Unfortunately I'm leaving town in the morning and can't take the stuff with me. So I'm going to have to rely on my folks to find someone that can saw the stuff into usable pieces and mail some of it to me. We have a family member in North Carolina that may be able to saw it, but in case he can't does anyone know what/where/who I should look for to cut this stuff up? Also, I know it's used to make guitars sometimes, but can't find much info on the stuff. Anyone used Brazilian cherry before? Anyway, I just thought I'd share my score tonight. Thanks for looking! |

Change the name to "Jatoba" and you will find a whole lot more answers.... Bruce Sexauer posted some opinions about it over on the UMGF -- apparently he likes it a whole bunch, but said something along the lines of it needing a long time to open up. I have a stash I plan to use.... Some day. Thanks John |

Bruce Sexauer also commented that it was one of the stiffest woods he has ever bent and said he had to go quite thin in order for it to work. Also said it was one of the best woods he has used. Tom |
