Is a scroll saw worth having if you already have a band saw? My band saw is a small one but thought the variable speed on the scroll might make for more precision when making some cuts and forms templates etc, just would like some opinions, seeing some dang good deals on craigslist. Rick

I like my scroll saw for what you just said. So yes is my answer. Likewise it makes it easier to make kerfed lining due to the blade orientation vs the frame of the machine.

I have and use both , I have found several places where the scroll saw has proven better than a bandsaw .

I like and have, both. If I'm working on something that requires a fine blade or tight curves, it's easier to just whip out the scroll saw rather than switch to a different blade on the band saw. I got mine on craigslist and got a good deal too.

I have had a scroll saw from a garage sale in my wood shop for 10 years, never used it until I started guitars, like the others, I leave a bigger blade on the band saw. I have not delved into all the cool blades available, but I think we can do more with a scroll saw then we may expect, just need the right blade.

you can set up a scroll saw to do nice cuts - like mentioned make sure to get a some nice blades. Read all you can on setting it up - lubricate it and you will like it. Plus you can make many other things with it. Although keep in mind it sucks to cut really thick things - it excels at cutting from veneers to 3/4" up to 2" pieces - anything bigger, I go for the band saw.

I use both and my scroll saw gets alot of use. The dust collection is my biggest issue in useing it. I do like the tighter cuts i can make with the scroll saw over the band saw.

If you work close to the blade then a scroll saw is quite a bit safer than a band saw. There is little mass to a scroll saw blade and it travels at a significantly slower rate than a bandsaw blade...so a broken blade is far less dangerous coming off a scroll saw.

They replied, "Well it's not easy, but we stock a lot of blades."
