Post subject:  Brace depth

Hi

I seem to posting quite a bit these days - sorry :D

I have cut some x braces 16mm * 8mm for a new OM - in the process of putting the radius on the braces I have managed to trim the depth down to about 13mm ! - is this borderline or should I re cut new braces - what is the minimum depth of a brace or is it suck it and see?

Should be OK if the top is left suitably stiff .. OMs can have 1/4 x 1/2 bracing anyway ...

I suppose it all boils down to the sq mm 1/4 * 1/2 = 80sq mm - so I suppose 10 * 8 would - should be the same

Well 10 * 8 gives 80 but if you're talking about getting the same stiffness as a brace that's tall and narrow with one that's shorter and wider then it doesn't boil down to sq mms.

A brace twice as wide is twice as stiff, so far so good but the height doesn't work the same way. The stiffness is a cube function of the height. Double the height and the brace is eight times stiffer. That is, it will deflect 1/8 as much as one half as high.

So loose a little height, loose a lot of stifness.

If i read it right, he says he has 8x13 left .. 1/4 x 1/2 is about 6.3 x 12.5mm .... its still in there ....
