I m going to finish my first soon. Padauk and it seems to have many large pores.(Bad choice for 1st) What do you guys recommend for filling? I m planing on doing a shellac seal coat and then a water-based lacquer.

I use West Systems (105 resin/205 hardner) most of the time. I've also used CA(superglue). There's alot of ways to do it, and materials to use.

Recently used the LMI water based pore-filler on 2 walnut guitars..seems ok. Will likely venture down the 'egg whites' road on next porous wood.....lookin' for clean/least toxic alternatives.....heck, may need to eat the guitar someday!!! laughing6-hehe

I have sucessfully used the Target HSF5100 Waterbased Pore Filler. My early experiences had me leaving the product on too long before scraping flush, resulting in too much sanding. I now wait 3 minutes max. Over EIR I only have to go two coats with a 2-hour wait in between.

I used CA on my first build. Just used a paper towel and rubbed it on. took 3 applications to fill the pores. Worked fine. However, the next time I'll probably try Z-poxy.

Rick: I've made a couple of Padauk guitars, and Padauk doesn't have pores,it has pot holes. All the same an excellant wood. I filled with zpoxy but had to do 3 coats, then overcoat with nitro.

I will put the 1st coat of Z-poxy on build #8 a Cocobolo back and side Dreadnought with Adi top. The Coco is very straight grained and looks a little boring but after final sanding I wiped it clean with Naptha and the wood came to life for a few seconds. I can hardly wait to see it with the Z-poxy on. This will be my 5th Z-poxy fill and each one has been a little easier to get right and less mess to sand out. Even the 1st was easier to get a good fill than any of the paste fillers I had tried up to that point.
