Post subject:  Tannin and Oxalic Acid

This is a follow on from a previous post but I thought it worthy of a new post as it shows a before an after a treatment of Oxalic Acid.

The results are remarkable, I was ready to put this in the trash, many thanks for the suggestion.

That's quite remarkable indeed. Is that just wiped or sanded as well?

Hi

I used two teaspoons of acid salts in a medium size jam jar and mixed with water. I brushed it on and then wiped the excess with a rag and left it for about an hour.

Amazing !

Kind of funny to see oxalic acid on a subject line in this forum. I'm on a few old bicycle forums and there are discussions about using oxalic acid to clean the rust and oxidation off of chrome and painted parts. It can do weird things to bare metal, though. They sell it as "wood bleach" at the hardware store. I have a little tub but haven't tried it yet for rusty bike parts. From what I understand, a little goes a long way. The cleaner "Barkeepers Friend" uses oxalic acid as the main ingredient.

I have one of those old blue metal chests with the brass plated hardware. We had the carpets cleaned at one house and the cleaner never put the chest up on sponges/blocks whatever. I didn't notice that, but months later when we moved the chest, it had left major rust stains on the light berber carpet. Tried oxalic acid on it and voila, completely removed. Love the stuff.
