Just about ready to start finishing my 2nd. I am just wondering where everyone gets their shellac flakes. I would prefer to get it locally if at all possible.

-Thanks,

eric.

I've done LMI flake, but Micheal Dale Payne recommends Zinsser SealCoat Universal Sanding Sealer for French Polish...NOT the normal Shellac that Zinsser sells at the big box stores. I can fint the SealCoat at the big box store around me though. It lasts 3 years from manufacture date due to some mystery preservative. The only drawback is you dont have much control of the color.

Locally you're on your own. Locally for me would be
Shellac.net [:Y:]
It's at least in the same state for me.

Thanks for the link Tom. Have been looking to find Canadian supplier for Target coatings.

Wow, I am happy to learn that premixed is acceptable. I thought dry was the only way to go. I will have to check around to see if I can get the correct Zinsser product around here. Thanks for the help. I will probably ask for it again soon as this is my first attempt at a french polish. :)

I get mine from Rockler. Their flakes come in 2oz bags which is great if you don't have a scale. Just add 8oz alcohol for a 2lb cut

International Violin. Look for shellac flakes, not French polish, which is a process not a product. They sell natural resins too. If you mix your own, it's easy, cheaper, and you know how fresh it is.

Just reinforcing a crucial distinction----On Zinsser, make sure you buy the SealCoat. It is the dewaxed product.
