| Post subject: | I'd like a couple of recommendations |
First off, I'm looking for a good tutorial dvd on guitar voicing. I've looked around and the ones by Kent Everett and John Mayes look good. Anyone have any opinions here? Also, I'd like to get ahold of a good parlor guitar plan. If anyone has any recommendations on either subject I'd really appreciate it. Thanks guys! |

I have Kent's and both of John's videos. If I could only get one set I would go with John's original voicing and the advanced voicing videos. Then get Kent's when you can afford it. As a newbie I guess I just liked John's videos a bit more. He shows and explains his approach to voicing a top very well. In the advanced voicing video he braces and carves 4 tops - He is constantly explaining how and why he carves, as well as the brace placement, ect. Kent's video is very good too - I believe he shows how he voices 2 tops. I don't know much about parlor plans but the Guild of American Luthiers has a ton of plans - check there first. Let us know what videos you get. |

I have Kent Everett's, John Mayes' and Alan Carruth's. For starters, I'd recommend John's, and later, Kent's and Alan's. Pat |

John's for sure, uncomplicated and straight forward, he has decent recording of the tap sounds and their changes as he works. Alan's is also great but a much more complicated process and requires purchasing equipment to do it, but worth watching for information. I saw Kent's and to me he says a lot about how he does things but I thought it was less useful than the others. I will get Kent's set up video some day as I have heard many good comments on its usefulness. Fred |

You can't go wrong with either John's or Kent's - I have all three. I agree with the idea of getting John's first and then Kent's. By the way, Kent's setup video is excellent. Chuck |

I have all three, like the others said I think johns is the best to get you started,he jumps right into the carving of the braces,and gives you some good ideas how to proceed with the task, Kents is a bit more involved and Alans more andvanced " scientific" approach is good too,however some equiptment is required .
