I bought an old Millers Fall plane this weekend (see this thread http://www.luthiersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=28085) and have spent the last couple of evenings flattening the sole with 60 grit(to start with) on a flat surface. The good news is, the sole is dead flat. The bad news is, so is the tip of my left hand ring finger!
As I was pushing the plane body along, my finger slipped and ended up going through the throat of the plane. Caught between the plane body and 60 grit paper, it didn't stand a chance. The 60 grit basically removed the tip of my finger in one neat stroke. What a surprise! Let's be careful out there.

yo Mike,

Sorry that happend to you.
Reminds me of a planer blade...actually a jointer that turned the same finger to a pile of sliced baloney all fanned open like a book...one band aid closed it all back up and it was healed in a month. Learned me a thing or two it did.

Ouch doesn't quite seem to cover that. Stuff happens when we least expect it. One of the reasons I try to do as much work by hand as possible. You can definately still hurt yourself either way, though.
Chris, watch the knuckles.

Me too! While I won't be playing guitar for a couple of weeks, the good news is that I don't use that digit much when playing the piano, so there's that.
As far as the injury, it's not that bad. It did take off a nice, thick chunk of flesh I would rather have kept, but it will heal. The thought of it happening is much worse than the actual event, but it certainly underscores the fact that if you're not watching and aware at all times, you can get hurt with this guitar building thing we do.
By the way, in case there's any doubt, I'm finished working on my new plane for today, lol.

There should be a "sawstop" device that shuts down even handtools... beehive
