Hi Many of you recommend coating the top with shellac before routing the rosette, do I shellac the whole top or just the area I am cutting ? Could I shellac both sides completely and would this be beneficial ? (re long thread recently posted about shellac on the insides) I will be sanding the top and back to a final finish after the rosette and sound hole is cut. Thanks John |

John: Just in the area of the rosette. It helps to prevent tearing at the edge of the cut out. Tom |

You can do the whole top. It's not a bad way to keep the top from getting stained and dirty. You can either wipe if off with alcohol, or sand it off in a few strokes. It does not penetrate very deep. |

Silly question: When you say coating with shellac, what specific shellac are you talking about (and where do I buy it? are we talking about shellac flakes, etc, or a "canned" shellac? Thanks, Glenn |

That should work fine. I use about a 2lb cut. |

hmm I never heard this one before but I will give it a try since I almost always get some tear out. The method I use now to help with tear out is to use a razor knife circle cutter to score the lines before routing. |

Lacquer works fine too. Just dip a rag and rub it in. A couple coats is insurance especially with softer spruces like Engelmann. Important part is to let it completely dry hard. |
