The search engine doesn't seem to working at all, so I thought I'd try a new post. I'm about to position the bridge on my first, and seem to be running into a bunch of different methods. Is there such a thing as a definitive way to measure? What do I measure _to_? Scale length is from the nut to where exactly on the bridge or saddle? As always, thanks in advance for the help. I can almost see home from here  Steve |

Hey Steve .. every one does it sightly differently, but with the same goal in mind .. correct compensation. I measure from the 12th fret, seeing as I comp at the nut too, the full scale length needs to be adjusted if I use that .... and besides, I usualy dont have the nut installed when I am doing a bridge. So use half the scale length, measured from the 12th fret .. then I add 2.5mm, and set that new measurement in the centre of the slot, between the D and G strings .. so dead centre both ways on the saddle slot. |

I do it the same way as Tony, and for the same reasons...  I usually use 3 mm compensation, to the center of the saddle slot, between string 3 and 4.I use the neck centering jig from luthiersuppliers.com with the bridge posititoning attachment.

Another endorsement for Tracy's jig. I have marked the longitudinal of the jig for the various scales I deal with and I made extra "T's" that have pilot holes drilled for a 3/32nd" tig tungsten electrode-very needle sharp) which marks the centerpunch for drilling for holes on 3.25" centers for an American Tune-O-Matic for example. That way I did not alter the unversal nature of the jig. So I have "T's" for Nashville style TOM and metric clones and for marking the positioning screws for Fender Trem versions. That one jig offers such confidence that the neck is really centered-it doesn't lie. Worth twice the price. |
