I am buying a SJ plan from StewMac and would like to read some building thread of this kind of guitar, but I am having some trouble with search command, "SJ" is too short and "small jumbo" leads to few messages. May I have some help?

thanks a lot

Roberto...my advice to you is that you address any questions to Michael Payne directly. The OLF-SJ iteration that SM sells is a modified design and is not historically accurate. I make no judgment on its performance against the original design...only that it is different. Also be aware that because its outer perimeter has changed, it will not fit snugly in a standard SJ case but may require a custom case. Should you wish to purchase a custom case, Michael had also been involved with Ameritage to produce a case in which his modified design fits.

I've made several OLF SJ guitars and like Todd, modified the bracing and other specs significantly from the print. In all cases, the end resulted in a fine sounding guitar. I did, however find it personally annoying that the outside dimensions deviate significantly from the original. Others might feel differently. On future SJs, I will restore the shape to the original so I can actually call it an SJ instead of an OLF SJ. I was also surprised at how little info is now available in the archives on OLF SJ. Perhaps this thread can solicit experience from folks who have used the plans.

BTW...if anyone has an accurate tracing from a genuine SJ, please contact me. TIA

Thanks for the dimensions, Todd. Just what I needed!

thanks for the replies,

I have built electric instruments until now (mainly basses), and now I would like to approach the building of acoustic ones, so I am in the 'data collection' phase. I hope to post soon my own 'SJ build' thread...

Roberto,

I built an OLF SJ over a year ago and later built a design closer to a J-185, but with a touch more width in the waist. You can probably find a few of my posts regarding the OLF SJ in this forum, but I really didn't have much of a build thread. I built the OLF-SJ using figured large leaf maple for the back and sides and WRC for the top. Beautiful guitar with a nice shape that sounded really nice. I found the plans to be pretty good. Some folks here feel the bracing on the plans is a bit heavy, others feel the bracing as shown on the plans is fine. The plans provide a good basis to start from, and you can tweak and modify to your preference as you build.

Ken
