Well I'm not breaking any records here but as a guy that really just started this feat a short time ago, it's getting better. Here is a before and after of the back I am working on. Spanish cedar back. This is my first glue up and brace carving. Glue up... and yes I've been told about the deflection in the bars....lol I'm still learning. Then onto the brace carving. Any feedback is appreciated!! |

I think it looks very reasonable. And yes, you can shorten the go bars |

GW Two Cherries chisels and one of Stephen Boone's planes, nice. A couple of things on the bracing. The center strip should have the grain running perpendicular to the back. This is much stronger in resisting a split at the center seam. I leave the ends of the braces at .090" for the first 1/2" from the edge of the outline. That way I can use a router to cut the relief for the brace ends in the sides with a router. Your's will work like you have them, just takes more work to cut a tapered channel. SW |
