How dry is too dry?
Well if you squeeze or rub the wood between your fingers and it turns to sawdust...its too dry.

Richard- How are you planning to use your new wood moisture meter? ie- for planks or for resawn wood for guitars? Cheers John |

Richard- For guitar tops/backs/sides I think most folks just put them in a humidity-controlled room. It only takes a few weeks for the wood moisture to reach equilibrium with the room humidity. You can weigh the wood - when the weight stabilizes, you can assume that the wood is 'in balance' with the humidity in the room. I know that some of the older moisture testers wouldn't work accurately on thinner stock, but modern meters may be better in this regard. There are tables which give the moisture content of wood in equilibrium with different relative humidity levels: http://www.woodbin.com/ref/wood/emc.htm. A moisture meter is useful for planks and thicker wood, especially if you are milling it yourself from logs, running your own kiln, etc. Cheers John |
