Both terrifying and fun to get new challanges ! I am spraying my first sunburst now. and its lots of fun but scary as (&%€. :D All was looking great, then I sanded a bit to deep on one place so the color came out a bit lighter (round the soundhole !) So then I had to fix that, scary to hmm. well with lots of patience managed to fix it. then I made a bobo on the back when I saw a pore that was not filled preperly, ended with me having to sand the nitro of the back and start over. grrr. well all in all its going great, but Its these things that make one learn lots for the next guitar. so I am happy. I am not on 800 grit. cant wait to put another layer on tomorrow. [:Y:]

Wouldn't be the first time I've done that either! It's all part of sunbursts... or moonbursts!

That's gorgeous Haans. Did you use a single color for the burst? Did you use color added to the lacquer or spray water based dye and then lacquer? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm doing a guitar for my wife and she loves the color of yours. I've never done a sunburst before, so shopping for ideas.

Wow! Moonburst is awesome!
Lars, these things are great to learn and prevent on the next one. I was using a reducer with my nitro and it was drying too quick and gumming the spray tip. Several white specks later on the face of my build I was upset and stripped it back to wood.
Went back to straight nitro and all was well again.

Guys, it's black trans-tint in water, airbrushed straight on the wood. A weak mix is sprayed from about 2' to get the background, then some black is added to the mix and the moonburst is started. Several applications are necessary to blend, then finally more black is added to the mix and the edge is done.
The finish is oil varnish sprayed with spirit varnish over also sprayed. It is treated like lacquer (sanded and buffed) but with much greater care. Finally it's left to dry a week before stringing up.
Here's the back for you droolers...

Thanks for the info Haans. I may try to simulate it using water based dye sprayed directly on the wood and then lacquer, tinted lacquer. The only reason is my worry of sand throughs and the relative ease of touching up water based dye as opposed to alcohol as per my Stew Mac finishing book. By the way Lars, that burst looks awesome!

Always love seeing that one Haans. Can you tell me, did you spray colour and sand back first?? on the back ....... contrast & depth of colour in the figure seems too intense than from above. thx

Not sure I quite understand your question Dave, but nothing was sanded back...the back is sugar maple which, from my experience, brings out flame a lot better than other flamed maples. It's also a "sunnier" shot, which probably accounts for higher contrast. Some folks do stain dark and then sand back to accent the flame, but that has always looked a little contrived to me. Hope that answers your question.

Fillipo, I've always thought that the flame in the maple should do what it does. Dye it and leave it alone. Tom Ellis is one that dyes and sands I believe, and while the maple looks spectacular to most folks, looks to me like the contrast slider was slid a bit too far in Photoshop.
The "oriental" technique sounds interesting if it isn't overdone. The problem is how much do you do before it gets a little out of hand and overdone? It does sound a bit safer as I don't relish sanding Trans-tint...who knows what's in that stuff.
The other part to understand is that all bursts are a guess. Everything looks much darker dying the wood than when it's finished and buffed. Might be different with tints, but I always worry about clarity with tinted finishes. Nothing is more clear than dye right into the wood.
I guess I'd rather let the wood do what it does...

This is red maple and while it is much more subtile, never the less, it is lovely.

Well, you sure can't argue with the results... they all look great!
Thanks for that perspective Haans.
