Egg white pore filling involves sanding the wet egg white with 220 wet/dry paper to make a slurry, then it is squeegeed into the pores, section by section. Sand back, repeat, at least once, twice if you have big pores - the wood, that is!

Never done it but . . . probably. It's in the pores, egg white is sticky stuff, so is shellac. |

An old recipe is egg whites and chalk powder. I am told that it takes on color from the wood, at least if you are filling rosewood, but I never tried it. |

I had put a layer of shellac on the back of the one I am doing now kinda early on in building and my egg white fill went ok, although I had probably sanded it down somewhat by then. The egg white went much better on the sides which I had not shellaced, but I had been thinking it was because I was getting better at the process (was my first time doing it). Sand it down a bit and try it, you should be ok. |

I did a lot of egg white experimenting recently. As Waddy said, the idea is to mix wood powder and egg white to make a slurry....which is the same color as the wood being filled. Find Kim's exposition on the subject on this board. I followed that pretty closely and it yielded good results......after a few attempts. The egg white will stick very well to raw wood but I wouldn't trust it to stick as well to the shellac down inside the pore. One of the nice aspects of egg white filling is that it dries QUICKLY sands REAL easy....and stays stuck down inside the pore. This is a typical issue with fillers. Generally, the softer and easier they are to sand the more trouble it is getting them to STAY in the pore. I think putting shellac in there ahead of the egg white might work against its strong points. For what it's worth....I'm in the middle of five finishing experiments now (I take REALLY good notes  ) which mostly involves different pore filling ideas. The one that looks the most promising doesn't involve a specific step for pore filling. But if that doesn't work, I'd choose between the egg white method or the french polish method for pore filling. The more time I get to do hand work and listen to music....the better my wife likes me.

I pore filled 5 times and was still getting some de-poring when I sanded. Ill remember this for next time! |

Matt, you have an option left. While you are doing the FP for the back, you can use pumice to fill some of those unfilled pores. I have done it many times, because I haven't had a good pore fill before I started yet. Even after you have built some finish, you can put pumice on your muneca, clear it with alcohol, and go at the area with open pores. A few sessions of hard work will get them filled. |

That's true Waddy I didn't think of that. They look pretty good at this point, I guess ill be able to tell once I start polishing. Hopefully that will be tonight. |
