Post subject:  How To Store Wood

Hi,

I have not been around here for a while but am back.

A couple of years ago, I bought a bunch of top, back and side wood and did nothing with it except put it on the shelf under my workbench. I pulled it out the other day and some of it has a slight warp or twist. I have been able to get it straightened out but I am now sure that I need to do a better job of storing it.

How should I store this wood? It is a mix of mahogany, rosewood, maple and spruce.

Thanks,

Jim

I can attest that this works, the humidity in my house and shop went through the roof due to me basement flooding last week and with my furnace and AC damaged I have been at the mercy of mother nature for 8 days now and the wood is without damage so far. The HVAC guys should be here this morning so I hope to be back to normal real soon. I like the rocks I am more boring using plain old bricks.

I suggest that if the wood is still not completely dry or acclimatized to your shop, each piece should be
stickered individually rather than grouping them in pairs as Filippo seems to have here. You want the air
circulation around all faces to be as equal as possible. If one face dries out faster than another, the wood
has a much greater chance of cupping.

Place some weights over top. You might sticker the wood to help distribute the weight more evenly across the wood (typically one stickers to have air between the boards when drying, but I'm assuming everything is well dry).

Once I know it is dry and reasonably flat, I just put a piece of MDF over top and place a few rocks ...

Hope this helps ...

Hi Jim - seems like you and I are on similar tracks - I had a few questions on stickering which I recently raised on another post. Thank you Filippo for your pictures. They helped to answer a couple of questions I had.
Man I love the OLF!

Cheers
Rick
