I've decided to take some more wood off the neck of my #2 guitar, which is French polished, since the neck shape has never felt very comfortable to me. I will not be removing wood evenly in all areas, so some places will still have the finish intact. I'm assuming that I will have to sand the entire neck and heel to bare wood and start a finish from scratch? In that case I may opt for another finish on the neck, maybe True Oil. Or I might French polish again. My question is, is there any chance that I would be able to french polish the areas that I change and blend it in? Thanks, Wendy |

You can probably blend it in. No harm done if you cannot and then decide to take the finish down and go with another. If you decide to take it down, I think that you can to that with alchohol and avoid excessive sanding. |

Be careful using alcohol. If it runs anywhere, your project may get bigger fast. If it was me, I'd scrape the finish off the neck shaft, leaving finish on the heel and the head. I'd use the scraper to do the bulk of the work, then finish with sand paper--220 should work. At the head, I'd sand back to make a clean line of bare wood at the corner where the neck joins the head. A the heel, I'd leave finish on the neck, try to feather that edge to get a smooth line, and even color change, with sandpaper, then try to blend that transition as I French polished. |
