okay. i made another mistake. i used black fiber binding on the weiss style 1 i'm building. nice to work with, but now that i'm down to finish sanding, it looks ugly as heck. looks like carbon fiber, gray. i tried sanding a piece down to 600 grit, finish on it, not much better. so, fixes... spray one coat of finish on box, then sand finish off binding, then stain with black analine?
or, mask off sides and carefully stain binding with analine? i'm thinking the stain might wick into the wood. makes me really appreciate the quality of those git-boxes some of you folks make. from now on it's wood bindings for me.
oh, this is the third weiss style for me, and acoustic number six.

hey filippo, hi. i've read some of your replies to others, and like what i've read.
yeah, i used it as binding, and was thinking i made a mistake and that it should be used for feature strips,only, but some old posts on this site aid it looks fine, blah blah blah. i might just re-bind the git, but it'll be tricky with the freatboard on...

hey, if you are still here, is there a tutorial on doing the binding like on your hauser?
with the green feature strips in there?

i'll try to not mis-spell so many words, this time. anyway, i'm going to re-bind the guitar, which i have to do mostly by hand, not router, because the weiss has so many strange things going on with the back.

I use the .060 black fibre as binding on guitars with ebony bound arnrests and ribrests ... seems to work fine, the colour is slightly off but not obnoxious ... I tint the whole thing anyway, as the rests are usually spanish cedar. I also bound a headstock once with tnad it looked fine on its own. Might be the colour didnt penetrate the fibre as it was being made ???

i'm leaning toward leaving it, fine sand the binding, naptha wipe. keep the git,
unless the person who wanted to buy it doesn't care about it.
the way it sounds is more important to me.
pics and soundclips coming for those who care.

I am glad I came in here to see this thread. Filippo, your purfling cutter is perfect! Thanks for that! I have been trying to come up with a way to do this that does not cost hundreds of dollars.

I used black fiber binding on the guitars I built in Sergei deJonge's course (I was in a hurry and you don't have to pre-bend that stuff!). It finished to about .060" so may have been .080" stock. There were some grey areas in the strips- particularly where they had been scraped or sanded. Apparently the quality of the 'recycled' materials that go into some of the fiber can vary. It was as if there were black&grey layers in the stock. Anyway, I was quite upset, but nobody else seems to notice the 'defects' under the finish.
It certainly is nice stuff to bend and glue.

I used black fiber as a head plate once. After sanding and shellacing, the color was grey/brown. I sanded it back and used a black stain from Stewmac and that worked except that it also stained my MOP inlay. I finally stained the plate useing a small artist brush avoiding the inlay and it came out great. It's too much work to do this though. Future head plates have been ebony or black veneer.

I used black fiber for binding on a guitar just once. During sanding grey, rather than black, areas appeared. I think it would be OK if you were very careful so that you only had a minimal amount of sanding to do so you didn't sand through the black layer. Never-the-less, I won't use it for binding again.
