Hi all I am using zipflex for the first time. In the past, I have only used solid shell, so I have never used ablam either. When routing the channel, what is the best strategy for making sure you don't sand though the shell. Do you route slightly deep and sand the top down to the top of the shell??? What works best. |

Hey Andy. It's made from .050" abalam. You can sand abalam but if you sand too much, you get into lower quality shell and the appearance will change. The higher grade shell is supposed to make up the top 2/3 of the thickness so there is plenty of leeway but I wouldn't want to sand a lot of shell even if I could. |

The trick is to have the channel about the same depth as the shell or a few thou deeper so that only a little amount of sanding is needed to get it flush with the shell. |

Andy, I left mine about 1 hair lower than the top, then sanded down to it. Just make sure your ledges are very even. Something that worked for me...I shellacked the channels, then super glued the zipflex in first. I just used a small block of wood with clear tape covering it, and used it as a push stick to hold the purfling in place while I dripped in a tiny drop of super glue. To apply the thin super glue, I pour a tiny amount on some wax paper, and use these little microbrushes to drop the glue in a very specific spot. http://www.micromark.com/SUPER-FINE-MICROBRUSHES-PKG-OF-100,8378.html I just work my way around the top until the purfling is super glued in place.
