Picea mariana to be exact, also known as Black Spruce. These trees rarely grow large enough to build a decent soundboard from, although maybe a small ukulele?
Anyways back to the topic at hand.I plan on building a Bridge Doctor using this type of spruce, since in my area it is everywhere.Has anyone used this wood for building?Google turns up short when i searched for the tonal characteristics, thought I would ask here.I have a feeling not all species of spruce are appropriate as tone wood.Or am I over thinking the tonal effect of a Bridge Doctor?
My guinea pig guitar will be an old yamaha with some substantial bulge below the bridge. It sounds remarkably good for an all laminate beater,i hope to resurrect it and pass it on.

Buck: If you want to do something with the Yamaha why not take the old top off and put a new one on. Forget about the bridge doctor. Tops especially in an AA grade are very reasonable. Have never used Black spruce but am sure if you can come up with large enough stock it will work or go with a 4 piece top . Have fun .
