I have been watching the Gilmer wood site and a few others. Around this area there is not much in the way of exotic woods. I was just wondering where online or elsewhere, Where do you buy wood? Do you like Kiln dried or Air dried?

Do you mean lumber- aka boards, or guitar back & side sets (already sawn)?

If you know what you're looking for and buy from a reputable seller. eBay can be a good source.

Check the local hardwood suppliers. You might be surprised what they have laying around. I found a good one about an hour from me. I go there every several months to look around and I have yet to come home empty handed.

I log many hours on the internet looking at what my wife calls Wood Porn.

I'm lucky enough to live near Gilmer, but also lucky enough not to live too close. ;) WYSIWYG from their website. Their inventory is all numbered. The smaller numbers are older inventory = more seasoned wood. Even though their website looks like they don't update very often, the inventory listed is fairly up-to-date. (Within a couple of days.)

It's funny, but I showed up there one Saturday afternoon to look through their wood. The guy asked me if I had any numbers from the internet so he could show me. He didn't like me poking around in his wood, potentially messing up his nice, neat inventory. :) We ended up with a solid mahogany guitar blank and a beautiful piece of recently cut, flamed maple that hadn't even been assigned a number yet. Too bad it will take a few years before it's ready to use!

I've also bought wood from Oregon Wild Wood. Outstanding shipping. Ordered over the weekend and got a nice redwood top on Tuesday morning. I'm hoping to get down there next month to see them in person. Could be dangerous to my bank account. :)

I've also bought wood from ebay. A beautiful koa billet that would have cost me many times more for just a guitar top, if it had already been cut to size.

I've never had a problem with any of the above. YMMV.

Gilmer is where I bought the figured Moabi. It really was not bad. I bought my top from Alaska Specialty Woods. It's sitka spruce. But I'm looking for others.... Not much around here even though you think there would be.
Oregon Wild Wood looks good. Some really nice wood there!

Thanks a bunch for everyones time!

I live 15 minutes from Gilmer, but I didn't realize they were open on Saturdays. This is going to cost me.

I made the mistake of using that term here a while back.........

search the archive to see the kicking I got.......

how good to see things have lightened up round here!!

anyway, I get wood anywhere I can.

some I buy from eBay, Some from the usual luthier suppliers (and if you use the links at the top of the page rather than google then the OLF will earn a few pennies) some I scrounge from dumpsters and resaw......

I have three church paws made from 1" thick braz hog planks awaiting my attention......
