Post subject:  Parlor sound hole

I'm building an Antes designed parlor and I'm wondering about sound hole size. I've seen many threads on sound holes and I wouldn't mind some input. My build is walnut b/s and a sinker redwood top and I'm considering a sound port option. Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

From what I can tell....I see no correlation between the sound hole size and the sound port. There may be . I don't really know....but it all seems to be in the "ears of the holder". How much sound do you want to get as a player. I really like a sound port. I'm half deaf anyway from 45 years of power equipment...so every directed sound towards me is an advantage.
I have 3 guitars with sound ports in upper bout and are roughly 1 -1 1/2 in oval shape. I get a nice sound directed to me....and doesn't seem to have much effect on front projection.
Start small and gradually increase the size and test along the way. I have one with a design of 4 smaller odd shaped holes together...and it doesn't seem to matter.

Thanks for the info I didn't know if I should deviate from the plan based on somebody elses experience with this design. I think I might consider putting in a sound port just because I've never done one. Again I appreciate the input!

I did much the same as Todd on a recently completed parlour made from the same plans. IIRC I deepened the body by 3/8" & cut WAY down on the brace size. 1/4" X .550" at the deepest part of the X braces. All braces in the lower bout feathered to nothing, about 3/8" from the linings. I stuck pretty close to the scale length on the plans. Made the neck narrower & thinner for a nice slippery feel.
This little guitar is pure dynamite! Huge sound for a baby sized box. Great sustain & surprisingly "present" bass. And it is totally fun to play.
I was thinking about a port, but it doesn't really need one. It cuts through the din just fine. Next one I do will have a port... Just can't resist the urge!
Have fun with your build. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I like this little baby.
This one's gonna be tough to part with.
