Most likely the truss rod, if you're using one. Try tightening it just a touch and see if that changes anything. Pat |

i just radiused the board and the rattle went away. maybe just some glue or something that got planed/sanded away. either way, no more rattle. ![]() thanks for the tip anyway, pat. sorry for wasting forum space with nonsense. |

just to be clear, this is an unfretted board that is NOT attached to the neck. |

I was just going to suggest what John suggested. So I'll suggest loose inlay maybe. But i still think john got it right....Mike |

Heath wet it with some naptha or alcohol. That should make a crack stand out. Don't forget the edges. |

If it's the truss rod, there's a silicone you can inject that's an instant cure. It has no effect on the function of the rod, just stops the rattle. |

That was not very helpful ![]() If you hold it at the sweet spot up next to your ear and tap it and you get no real sustain and more of a rattle, I recon it's a safe bet to be a crack. If it hisses at ya, drop it and run away quick. |

Well the fingerboard is not attached to the neck yet but silicone is recommended prior to installing the truss rod. A small bead at the bottom of the slot before installing the truss rod. I recommend 100% silicone which doesn't harden like silicone caulk. |

Kim wrote: It's not snake wood by any chance is it?? Cheers Kim ha! thats pretty funny. no, its not snakewood. it is mad rose though, and that can get crack happy i suppose. i havent had a chance to fiddle around with it anymore, but it rings long and loud when i tap it. im thinking theres just got to be something hung up in one of the fret slots. ill wet it down with some mineral spirits when i get a chance. see what i can see. ill probably dig around in those fret slots some more too. thanks to all for the advice and ill get back to ya with the findings. |
