Post subject:  EIR Substitute?
I have a customer who loves the sound of EIR - but wants something a little different in the build we may do for him.

What would you suggest we look at for substitutes that sound similar?

Cocobolo?
Amazon Rosewood?
Mad Rose?
Hormigo? (will be building with this soon)

Thanks for the help in guiding us. Someday I'll have enough experience to help someone else - but for now I have to lean on my friends at OLF.

Hormigo !
It's just great guitar wood.
The backs will usually not be on the quarter -just acclimate them & build in a 40%
environment.

what about figured Indian Rosewood ? It will look different.
How about Indian Rosewood with a thin veneer on top to make it look different ?

Eitherway - you ears can't tell the difference in the color of the guitar.


Sounds like your client wants something visually appealing and less boring. How about Indian with a 3 piece back - put some fantastic looking wood back there.

What doesn't he like about EIR. I built several EIR guitars only using the finest quality and I think it is just as wonderful in terms of aspect (and can ping as nice) as any other more expensive rosewood species. My point is find a top notch dark tight set and this is it.

Indian Laurel is pretty nice as well. Less "rose" coloured and bit denser. I have a few sets and plan a build with it myself in the future.

I'm with you Alex.
I think it's really hard to improve upon a nice dark straight grained set of E.I. in terms of sheer quality and aesthetic elegance.
I'm of the school that feels the visual interest should not come from the wood itself but the design the guitarmaker has created.

Oh, there is one scarce variety of Indian that is very red. It really looks stunning under finish.

This is a guitar with similar color sides (the back is the more common dark)

And this is a raw set (with a small shellac spot) I got later from Allied knowing how nice it will look.

I also love indian and have more sets then i'll ever use ;but variety is the spice of life!
How about Black Sassafrass ?
get ahold of the Zootman or any of the OLF sponcers.
They can probably send you pics of similar density woods -then let your client decide .

There is something to be said for Palo Escrito as well - also a true rosewood.

Anyone have a picture of a finished Hormigo guitar.

I just got a set from RCTonewoods.

It taps amazing, I think and looks pretty cool to.

Got it. Well, one thought is Osage Orange. You can't get much different than that - golden color, but nothing like maple.

I have one set from RC Tonewoods - havent' built with it yet, but it taps amazingly. Many compare it to BRW.

My favorite has become EIR that's in what LMI calls "First" grade - the middle one. I ask for a lot of gold streaks and use flamed Koa for the binding and the look is spectacular. You can change the general appearance of a guitar in many ways...

I've seen a 8000-euro classical which has light-brown(some may call it golden) EIR B&S, and its grain is still relatively tight.

Alex, I also have a red set and I found it very rare, less than 1%. I miss the $10 opportunity sets from Allied Lutherie.
