I am going to attempt a retopper, and wondered, how difficult it may be (what kinds of glues) to expect on 1969's or 70's vintage classical guitars, either Japanese or Spanish Portugese? Retop, back and fingerboard.

I did a test on my first blundered guitar, and in 5 minutes with an iron I had 5 inches removed fairly quick. (Hot Iron, wet cloth, steam heat knife method) (My top has no binding though, and I am thinking of using the iron/damp cloth method for most of thie gutiar, including the fingerboard, keep the neck, and redo the bottom and top.) I wil lNOT rout the top off of X myster ebay junker guitar.

Will it be as easy with factory glue? [:Y:]

Frei;
Most 69-70 vintage classicals probably used HHG.
Most factories then used PVA.
Both seperate easily.
Try a little white vinegar in your water.

Also, check out Greven Guitars online tutorial. It turns out that a Router with a bearing guide works out very well -- just cut right inside the binding.... Routers basically don't care what sort of glue you have... so long as it isn't full of sand or fiberglass....

This way, you don't also loosen/swell bindings and purflings or leave burn marks here and there.....

Thanks

Thanks, I am going to do the bindings with the hand blade thing, I hope it cleans up well enough for a good glue joint@! Got my eye on and old beater Spanish made guitar, hope it goes for under $50.00!

Or leave black stains when you use vinegar and forget your putty knife/spatula is not stainless.....
