Do any of you guys use veneers for the centerstrips in your laminated necks? I like a really fine line (1/32" or finer) and I'm not sure about using my thickness sander to go that low. So I thought about using an ebony veneer since it would be thin enough and I wouldn't waste a bunch of stock thinning it down. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Yep - works great. I've used maple and that just gives a nice classy line down the center. Ebony would work great as well.

If you have a source for real ebony veneer, please post it.

I've used black dyed veneer for neck lams with no problems, but the woods vary and some of them seem to have lost integrity in the dying process. Also, rotary cut veneers seem usually to have less structural integrity than flat cut. So I would make sure the veneer seems sound.

Thanks guys. I don't know why I didn't think of dyed veneer. That seems like a better way of doing it since the line is going to be so small it would be very difficult to tell if it was ebony anyway. [clap]

I use bought in 0.6mm wenge veneers in my lam necks. Pain filling in the pores with CA though.

I have had the same experiance as Howard, especially with a batch of some "thick" veneer.

A lot of old Gibson mandolins that used thick dyed center lams split.

I buy my dyed from www.certainlywood.com -great veneer supplier

I just checked their website. The wood is black dyed Costello-$2.50 a square foot.

I have used this wood for many years with no problem-It is jet black.
